What's happening in Namibia? | Namibia (2024)

Namibia is currently in a state of mourning over the passing of former president Hage Gottfried Geingob, who died on February 4, 2024, from cancer.

The former president will be buried at Heroes' Acre on February 25, 2024.

Heroes' Acre is located ten (10) kilometers south of the city centre of Windhoek.

The monument was built on August 22, 2002, to foster a spirit of patriotism and nationalism.

According to reports, while still alive, Geingob had refused to be buried at Heroes' Acre.

However, the new president, Nangolo Mbumba, saw it fit and decided that Geingob be buried at the monumental Heroes' Acre, where most of Namibia's national heroes and heroines are buried.

President Nangolo Mbumba is acting as Namibia's president, as prescribed by the Namibian constitution.

He said he has no intention of running for the presidential office in the next general election, scheduled for November 2024.

Mbumba says he is not interested.

Therefore, those with the same endeavor should not feel that Mbumba impedes their progress.

President Nangolo Mbumba appointed Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as the Vice President of Namibia.

He appointed Peya Mushelenga as the minister of international relations and corporations of Namibia.

He also appointed John Mutorwa as the deputy prime minister of Namibia.

Furthermore, he appointed Emma Theophelus as the minister of information, communication, and technology (ICT).

Modestus Amutse succeeded Theophelus and is the current deputy minister of information, communication, and technology.

'Only the same number of heads of state who attended Geingob's inauguration in March 2015 gathered at the state house to pay respect and homage to the grieving former first lady, Monica Geingos, and her children,' the Namibian reported this week.

The United States president, Joe Biden, will not attend Geingob's funeral and has decided to send delegates instead.

A ceremonial procession of Geingob's remains took place on Friday, February 23, 2024, in Windhoek.

Huge crowds gathered along Independence Avenue and other spots to pay respect and bid farewell to the former president.
